Why a drawing comes before a useful price
Custom CNC parts do not have a reliable catalogue price. The quote depends on the complete geometry, material, quantity, tolerance, finish and delivery requirement shown in the controlled data.
A low unit price can hide different assumptions about material grade, inspection, deburring, finishing or packing. Compare quotations only after the technical scope is aligned.
The main cost drivers
Most quotations are shaped by a small group of practical manufacturing decisions.
- Raw material grade, condition and starting size
- Machining time and the amount of material removed
- Number of setups, fixtures and tool changes
- Tight tolerances, fitted features and inspection requirements
- Surface finishing, heat treatment or outside processing
- Batch quantity, repeatability and packing requirements
How buyers can reduce avoidable cost
Identify the dimensions that are functionally critical instead of applying the tightest tolerance to every feature. Confirm whether cosmetic surfaces need a special finish and whether the quantity is a prototype, a first batch or a repeat requirement.
When possible, provide a 3D model together with a controlled 2D drawing. The model helps process review; the drawing remains the place for tolerances, threads, material and acceptance requirements.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a price from a photo only?
A photo can start a discussion, but it rarely defines dimensions, material, tolerance or hidden features well enough for a dependable quotation. A drawing, model or approved sample is normally required.
Does a larger quantity always reduce the unit price?
Often, but not automatically. Setup cost can be spread across more parts, while material, machining time, inspection and finishing still remain part-specific.
Why do two CNC quotations differ?
The suppliers may be assuming different material, process routes, inspection scope, finishing, packing or delivery terms. Ask each supplier to confirm the technical basis of the quote.
What is the fastest way to receive a useful quote?
Send the current drawing or model, material grade, quantity, critical tolerances, finish and required date in the first enquiry.
